I honestly don't think that's true at all. Certainly politicians do, in particular conservative politicians, but I don't know a single person who works in public health who thinks that 'personal responsibility' is a key factor in health

If class/income/race/education have more to do with health than the ADG, why bother with them at all? Why not just focus on adequate essential nutrition? Not to mention that the science on which the DGA/ADG is founded is rife with class/race/gender issues as well.

Why should it be either/or? And science is not produced in a vacuum, of course there are issues. The question is always how/why that biases research, and what it means, not throwing results away wholesale

Um. Because the whole notion of preventing chronic disease through choosing the "right" foods and "avoiding" the wrong foods was built on connecting class-based health disparities to class-based differences in eating. How is that something worth preserving?

Let me put it this way: I think there is room for national recommendations wrt consumer education. I don't think that should be the only or even the primary method of reducing poor health in the community

Why though? What do these recommendations accomplish? I mean besides to indicate which ways to eat/be in the world are scientifically proven to be better than others?

I think what AH is challenging is the ethics of “telling people what to eat” and “telling people what to eat to achieve health” - who decides, how? Where is the evidence “national GL” have achieved their objective, wrt adverse outcomes?? AH? amiclose?

Nothing wrong with removing SSB from hospitals. Whatever. But I would have serious doubts that it is going to improve the health of the people in NSW with the worst health problems. Good PR though.

But that's not the aim at all. No one thinks we're going to cure obesity by removing SSBs from hospitals

Okay, so again, what's the point? I'm not opposed to it, but what *is* the point?

Part of a broader effort to reduce the intake of SSBs. Can't advocate for sugar taxes or reduced intake of sugary beverages if we're selling them by the bucket just outside ED!

Just please don't tell me the SSB are getting replaced with 100% real fruit juice
