Of course! So every minute we spend on "red herrings" is time wasted. "What to do" is sitting there in the literature...and was on our tv screens on Monday night via @4corners with @kieron_rooney @mmoore50 @janemartinopc ....but did we all miss the common denominator...

...the HSR - compromised by food industry, the ADG compromised by food industry, research compromised....policy decisions compromised.... is a "sugar tax" another red herring?

I would argue no, it's quite well supported by international evidence and whilst certainly not a 'cure' for obesity, will pave the way - and help fund - further prevention efforts

No. The evidence re: diet-chronic disease is inconsistent, inconclusive & in every way inadequate to the task. Again, science & policy disregard issues of class & race in tying nutrition knowledge to personal responsibility for long-term health. Remember pellagra & public health?

I honestly don't think that's true at all. Certainly politicians do, in particular conservative politicians, but I don't know a single person who works in public health who thinks that 'personal responsibility' is a key factor in health

If class/income/race/education have more to do with health than the ADG, why bother with them at all? Why not just focus on adequate essential nutrition? Not to mention that the science on which the DGA/ADG is founded is rife with class/race/gender issues as well.

Why should it be either/or? And science is not produced in a vacuum, of course there are issues. The question is always how/why that biases research, and what it means, not throwing results away wholesale

Um. Because the whole notion of preventing chronic disease through choosing the "right" foods and "avoiding" the wrong foods was built on connecting class-based health disparities to class-based differences in eating. How is that something worth preserving?

Let me put it this way: I think there is room for national recommendations wrt consumer education. I don't think that should be the only or even the primary method of reducing poor health in the community

Why though? What do these recommendations accomplish? I mean besides to indicate which ways to eat/be in the world are scientifically proven to be better than others? 🙄

I think they can be part of a broad package aimed at making it easier for people to live healthy lives. Changing the environment is important, but education is a necessary step, if only to build momentum!

To put it another way: NSW Health just removed all sugar-sweetened beverages from their hospitals based on community interest. The community interest probably wouldn't have come about if the message that SSBs aren't great wasn't spread around

Supported by political will there too tho - Vic has had a “healthy hospitals” policy since > 2012. Like most org, hospitals want to comply with the views of the community it serves, but if there’s no incentive (or disincentive) it drops down the list of competing priorities
