I just find the whole conversation about "weightloss through exercise" annoying because we know that isn't how it works but the persistent message is to exercise more to lose weight

Yep. Aside from the fact that people feel they’ve failed when they put on a little bit of weight from muscle, it’s not how it works. I use this diagram for my patients. It’s highly simplistic but gets a point across.pic.twitter.com/a2yV6uC9ui
