Talking to JJJ Hack (another oh-so-cool place I don't usually go) in an hour or so, so you'll see then. Re the postal survey and SSM, a very interesting point. I reckon it may radicalise young voters like Vietnam did in the late 60s.

I have to say I'm not sure that the argument that the Coalition would be disadvantaged by lowering the voting age is valid. Surely it should be about whether we consider 16 a responsible age if anything?

Think back to when you were 16 and then ask your question again! An age of all care, no responsibility and the Bank of Mum and Dad.

My point exactly! We can argue about whether 16 is different to 18 re:voting, but whether this impacts the Liberals is surely not the main issue here, despite being what's going to define the party-line support

Given the idealism and issue leanings of under 18s who are interested in politics, they're more likely to lean Left than Right.

Absolutely. Age is the greatest predictor of conservatism. But it seems like your main argument here is that your political party would be disadvantaged? Because that seems like a neither democratic nor libertarian position to take!

My argument's wider than that. Let kids be kids is the gist though.

Perhaps a sensible compromise would be non-compulsory voting allowed from 16-18 allowing kids to be kids while still giving politically active youth the voice they're asking for?
