Drinking is bad for you at any amount. Moderate drinking is a myth. Drink because it's tasty, not to improve your health! https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/apr/12/one-extra-glass-of-wine-will-shorten-your-life-by-30-minutes?CMP=share_btn_tw …

"But Gid!" you ask, "Isn't this just another observational trial like the ones you yell at online?" Well, yes. But!

Observational trials can't really establish causation. They do, however, give us evidence towards a point

Previous large studies like this one have looked at alcohol/drinking and found that a moderate amount of drinking was associated with LESS disease i.e.pic.twitter.com/9SBujEyKiw

The thing is, this is counter-intuitive. We know that alcohol causes many varied harms, and there's not really a reason why a smaller dose would be less harmful

There's also what's known as a "dose-response curve" for alcohol. Basically, the more you drink, the worse off you'll bepic.twitter.com/07wOSSuJiW

So a finding that goes against this well-established evidence is weird Which is where our new study comes in

They found that a higher intake of alcohol was associated with a range of risks, including all-cause mortality (death)

They ALSO found a pretty clear dose-response curve, where people who drink more were more likely to diepic.twitter.com/JDai8VCcpd

Does this mean that any amount of alcohol is definitely bad for you? Well, not exactly

Is it very likely that there is no 'safe' level of alcohol intake? Almost certainly

Essentially, this study adds a lot of weight to the idea that drinking any amount of alcohol is doing harm to your health

By itself it's perhaps not that meaningful, but in the context of other research it's a pretty solid conclusion: alcohol is bad for you at any dose
