Yes, leaky gut is the common cause of all autoimmune disease even those totally unrelated to intestinal actionpic.twitter.com/eg6WOlg26h
Some more lovely pseudoscientific waffle about leaky gut ("immune response!" "Intestinal barrier!" "Bacteria and food waste"-wow she must be a scientist!)pic.twitter.com/nEqD1nzTa9
Take home: if you're largely asymptomatic and your tests are fine, never fear! Chances are you're still actually sick and need this dietpic.twitter.com/r7WausYrpR
I have not read the book, so can't comment, but I think you should live up to the "Nerd" title and spend some time on pubmed before you label things as nonsense. There is lots of emerging evidence of the power of diet on autoimmune conditions.
Mmm but even if there's strong evidence of which I'm not aware for specific indications, the idea that all autoimmune conditions are caused by intestinal leakage and that this can be fixed with a paleo diet seems to be entirely unsupported
I am sure the book goes ahead of the science, but there is a lot of emerging evidence and I would be hesitant to dismiss it as nonsense. eg this article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27355913 pic.twitter.com/aClsIbJNPn
I feel like that article largely supports my point? It's mostly theoretical, and suggests rigorous research as the way forward. It's also on a single condition
It however is not nonsense, more research (nerd like) activity is required, not dismissal, especially if diet is otherwise healthy, which paleo generally is. We do not know everything and dismissal of new ideas based on appeal to authority is dangerous
Right. So there may be specific claims (i.e. "there may be a component of chronic intestinal leakage in certain autoimmune conditions") that are hypothetically plausible, but the idea that all autoimmune disease is caused by leaky gut is pretty wildly unsupported
No, there is evidence that such diets can help people, but more research is needed to define the response and exact diet. However it is reasonable for people to try such diets if they are otherwise reasonable.
But there's a pretty big gap between "help people" and "cure all autoimmune disease" surely?
Certainly is, but when we don't have good treatment options medically and there is some evidence I have no objection to people trying a whole food based diet. I am unaware of exactly what recommended in book, but does not deserve "Nonsense" label.
