Yeh actually there's a large body of evidence supporting the use of breathing control to help anxiety/panic attacks so if you're not trying to help someone control their breathing you might wanna start

For me breathing exercises are one of the few things that actually helps, so I find it weird that people are getting mad at being told to breathe!
