Having read up on #cricketgate and why it's so bad that the dude rubbed some tape on his balls, I have a scientific question:
Is there any evidence that this 'tampering' does anything?
But, like, how do we know? It seems to me that the accepted orthodoxy doesn't have a huge amount of evidence

I used to do it as a 15 year old, the how do we know is pretty basic aerodynamics

it happens in most tests, you can take a new ball that isn't swinging (whether or not a new ball swings is highly dependent on weather, humidity & such), rough up one side & hold it the right way, & it will swing toward the shiny side.

if you don't cheat it will take about 30 to 40 overs to get the ball to swing this way
