Depends on circumstances. Often when people go AWOL, or in less judgmental terms take "non-negotiated leave", it is when they are out on unescorted leave already, which means they were doing ok and may well be close to going home. Varies from patient to patient.
At the other end of the spectrum, you can have people under schedule in ED who have not been assessed yet, have been violent in the ambulance, and punch a few people on the way out of ED.
