What I am learning through this process of booking surgery is even clinics that claim to be transparent and who send you fees aren't transparent about how much they charge above the scheduled fee. Or if they participate in gap cover.

Through my research I am discovering it is looking genuinely better to go public than private. Wait time not much. Same surgeons. However I am also learning i have a lot of negotiating power and may be able to get my gap down through asking the right questions. But time consuming

The only thing to watch out for is that the 'same surgeons' can be slightly misleading - might be the public registrar who actually does the surgery if you go public, with the surgeon just assisting

Also, sometimes you can get seen for consults in the public clinic - so bulk-billed - but have the surgery itself privately to save cash on consults
