If my wife and I moved out to save money, she'd have to reduce her hours or find another job and we'd both lose any connection to family

My bro and his wife moved an hour out and had to move back in because the commuting costs were more expensive than their mortgage.

Exactly this. I actually work an hour out of the city, but even if we moved near my job my wife would have to halve her salary in the process so we'd end up losing overall
