Bad headline, @nytimes. The study asks if docs should turn off epidural for pushing, that's all. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/10/well/family/epidurals-do-not-prolong-labor.html?_r=0 …

People in the study all had an epidural up until pushing started. This study isn't relevant to the "should I get one" question.

It's very irritating because that's how this study was reported everywhere and you're right it's not as simple as do or don't get one

And there IS other research to support the idea that, overall, epidurals prolong labor. (Haven't dug in but that's what google says.)

I think the breakdown here is that non-OBs don't know what "second stage" means. Maybe early labor? Active labor? (nope it's PUSHING)

Well here's a v recent systematic review that found that epidurals increase the 1st stage and no effect on 2nd stage https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/6188/ed5a2d49d0d44d7e144dc6d2e91cead0348a.pdf …

So yeh I'd 100% agree I think this is a misunderstanding of labor. Also, of side-effects, because length is only ONE issue
