Yeh US gun laws are terrible, although differs from state to state obvs. Spain is even more restrictive than Aus, as is France

Switzerland is pretty unique, lots of guns but very restricted ammo. High suicide rates by firearm but fewer gun homicides

Many permits are also required, and in practice much private gun ownership is former service weapons and tightly audited

Not as far as I know. As I said, quite a few permits: on the gun, medical certification, 3 monthly renewals etc.
