I was a guest at my first hetero Australian wedding last week, and for the first time, I heard the legal wedding vows.

For the first time, I heard the phrase "in Australian law, marriage is one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others” -

it was a nice wedding, truly, and I'm happy for the couple, but I wanted to be sick when I heard that line.

I don't think it's required to be honest. I've never heard it at a wedding before, and it certainly isn't going to be at mine!

It is required by law to say it mate. Have never been to a wedding where it hasn't been said

it's a legal requirement, why do you think we are having this plebiscite - to change the marriage act

I just didn't realize the phrase itself was read out aloud at weddings. I've never heard it read before

As I said, never not heard it recited, always with winces and apologetic looks in my direction. It is a requirement of the Act

Huh, fair enough. Probably a reflection of my peer-group, I suspect the civil signings are done behind closed doors or something

yep! so, maybe with a religious service these vows aren't read out to the public, but it's a legal requirement to say them
