I don't think that affects their capability to mentor. Even training won't overcome innately poor teachers/mentors though.

It's true of most university leadership roles: just because you are smart and good at research doesn't mean you'll be a good leader!

It may even extend into roles elsewhere. We are not (all) innately good at everything. We need training and supervision.

Oh it certainly does. The hospital system is no better, and I doubt most private organisations are either!
