I've always felt that the obesity issue seemed a bit strange. Locally we don't take it very seriously unless someone has gone too far.

I think it's a very complex problem. For example, the question of whether it is a disease is a very contentious one

A few of my doctors and the endocrinologist in particular think it's fine so long as your waist circumference isn't above 40 cm.

They're a bit histrionic when it comes to my waist because I have metabolic syndrome and one can never be too careful with that one.

But would you consider it an epidemic? Considering that it can be self inflicted as well?

I think it's again pretty tough. We know that most of the causes of obesity are socially determined

But on the other hand personal actions do play a role. There's certainly a tremendous amount of obesity in most countries

I'm not sure if labeling it an epidemic is a good or a bad thing. It's iffy.

In my opinion I think it's harmful because when a layman thinks of an epidemic they're thinking cholera or dengue. Using epidemic to refer

Obesity makes people think that they're dealing with fear mongering.

That's one side of the issue. On the other hand, talking about 'epidemics' is more likely to get funding than more restrained language

Man...public health policy is such a tight rope. I don't envy the difficulties you guys face at all.
