One of the things folks miss, is usually you buy a lot of products in preparation for the diet. Those companies need you to fail and fail again. Even if they have a nice person telling you to keep trying.

Only if you buy processed food. So the lesson is, don't buy processed food. You'll lose weight since you have to pay with so much time, you won't eat as much.

There is also a big survivorship bias issue with diets. The person fired up to tell me about how great paleo works will be among the small number for whom it works well.
-
Meaning those who are most likely going to be recruited are more likely than not, to be passionate about a diet?

Your house decorations can make you fat. Flame retardant chemicals used in sofas & carpets have a known obesity danger. But nobody expected anyone to eat carpets so not considered a biggy. Yet it turned out that contaminated dust from it still gets into your blood via lungs.

If you look at the obesity epidemic graph by date I would also not eliminate environmental microplastics as a possibility from the picture yet. It's one of those pollutants just keeps breaking down & building up. Plastic timeline fits nicely. Plastic - the new big tobacco?

Indeed. I’ve always looked at my weight as the balancing figure between energy consumption and energy burn. As long as I have a balanced diet this approach generally works over the long term. Too many factors in daily weight monitoring (so I don’t do it…)

The best way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight is not to “go on” a diet, but instead to change your diet to one that includes mostly healthy foods and that excludes unhealthy food.

Mushrooms are good for weight loss, they are low in usable energy. I've got 5 kg down since I started to hunt them more often this year. And I haven't even eat them that much (mostly I've just been taking pictures of them). ;)

Low carb is not sustainable. Try a fiber-rich /plant-based balanced diet instead. But there are still many other factors, including exercise, sleep, processed foods, sugar consumption that people need to adjust for for the long term effect.
