The eternal tension of public health - everyone wants a solution that they can do individually, but most of the things that work have to be implemented at a population level

And thus the siren call of the thought "all I should have to do is get vaccinated, and then I shouldn't have to do anything else to ensure my or others safety".

I have to keep reminding my self that the remit of public health is to do the most good, for the most people, at the lowest cost. It’s not medicine. It’s statistics and cohorts and policy

Not necessarily at the lowest cost. That’s just one priority. One of the hardest public health problems is getting people to understand that investment in prevention saves tons and tons of money later. And when it works, nothing happens.

Could you give an example outside of the pandemic context?

*not in any way epi* Could be any semi-lifestyle diseases? Like "obesity epidemic"? Which is caused by 100% factors and is a super complex issue but people reduce it to "lol just eat less".

I don't see it as http://tension.It 's rather the ability to zoom in and zoom out: the best for the individual is best for the masses, but one size doesn't fit all and that is also public health. The richness of the data is in the outliers who also makes up the equation.

And, conversely, many things that one might do to minimize one's personal risk from covid are unimportant regarding population health. (Once R is significantly less than 1, further actions offer limited population benefit.)

Most I think understand that, but when measures are introduced that make no sense, trust is lost, especially when not acknowledged and updated as knowledge improves.
