I remember working in the finance department of a hospital, and seeing how junior doctors basically never take sick leave Hard to argue with this article!https://twitter.com/jonathnrgoodman/status/1438760771484258305 …

Rather than treating covid-19 like flu, we should treat yearly outbreaks of flu and other pathogens more like covid-19. Our comfort with spreading viruses that we don’t consider deadly is, itself, an ethical failing. https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg25133522-500-we-should-isolate-when-we-have-flu-not-just-covid-19/ …

As a medical student I went to my internal medicine febrile without realizing it until folks told me I looked awful.

Someone on my team had shared a virus that eventually knocked out the whole team but kept coming to work while wearing a mask because that was policy. Unless febrile, show up to work.

Peter Sandman and I have argued for years that hospital flu vax mandates that force unvax'd HCWs to wear masks likely result in more vax'd workers able to transmit than unvax'd ones, once a huge majority of workers are vax'd -- given the low VE of flu vax. Presentee-ism!

I reckon hospital presenteeism causes a really substantial disease burden and it's really shocking that it is the culture that is still encouraged in most places!

It’s fascinating to see how flu has been much easier to control compared to COVID. I hope one outcome of this pandemic is recognising that we could reduce winter flu hospitalisations & have productivity benefits of less sick leave if we control resp viruses better.

Flu deaths collapsed in the US last year. It was crazy.

I think that COVID-19 is the first time we've truly accepted (in the NHS at least) that patients' infections can be a risk to staff. I appreciate 'flu is less dangerous and vaccines fairly good, but I wonder if we'll use PPE more reliably in the future.
