      COST OF A VACCINE: ~$30 USD COST OF A SYMPTOMATIC COVID-19 CASE: ~$3,500 USDpic.twitter.com/G6cxZH44X1

Source for this estimate:https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/full/10.1377/hlthaff.2020.00426 … To be clear, this is very uncertain, but even at the lower bound of costs for largely asymptomatic young people, vaccines are cheaper than infections in the US

If 50% of all infections are fully asymptomatic, and most infections are in young people, the median cost of a COVID-19 infection might be as low as $100-$200 USD, which is still many times the cost of a vaccine 🤷‍♂️

Worth noting that this is also just the DIRECT medical cost (i.e. medications, hospital etc), if you included the INDIRECT costs of infections (time off work, social upheaval etc) infections would be even more expensive

The end of "Discussion" alludes to a point that might imply much higher burden on the system: elective procedures have been delayed, and as expensive as COVID is, the elective procedures bring in far more money (to my understanding). Looking forward to retrospectives on that!

Heck, one missed day of work is worth ~300 USD depending on how you do the estimate, which means if only 10% of people miss one day, its easily a wash with the vaccine...and I'm guessing I just super low-balled absences due to a COVID-19 infection

Also need to factor in societal economic losses when people get sick. If you miss a week of work the flow on effect to the wider economy is quite large. Even a small amount of sickness in the community massively degrades economic performance

I have had so many people off work for a minimum of 2 weeks. Covid is costly on many levels.
