Why do we continue to focus on *doing* stats instead of stats comprehension and critical appraisal in the medical curriculum? I don’t care whether or not my doctor knows SPSS but I surely want them to be able to critically read their literature

I've had a very similar experience in petroleum engineering. Statisticians weren't hired to do the core data work, leaving it to petroleum engineers (who weren't properly trained to do it).

But even when that’s true, the vast majority of students will never actually do a scientific study. Those that want to learn can learn in research programs of graduate schools, no?

That sounds like logic, not sure this is an area that welcomes such rationality

Even then, all we learned was export the data from Excel, import into SPSS, use a little cheat sheet to select the “right” test, copy the result, CI and p-value and paste them into Word.

That's a little scary. Stats and methodology are the two most important aspects, IMHO, of judging a research paper.

well, you could work in a pharma company, but even they outsource most of the work to service suppliers.

This is true but replace "doctors" with "everyone, everywhere, eventually"

We require medical trainees to do research (in their spare time essentially) with few resources and pressure to publish, thereby reinforcing the illusion anyone can do research.

People are not taught about the complexity of methodology/statistics, so only statisticians think that statistics is difficult.https://twitter.com/ahmadh/status/1437305739521966084?s=20 …
