Updated ivermectin meta-analysis, removing the now-notorious Elgazzar et al. trial results. I am not happy with it. In fact, it would be true to say I am deeply unhappy with it.https://journals.lww.com/americantherapeutics/Fulltext/2021/10000/Ivermectin_for_Prevention_and_Treatment_of.7.aspx …

When academics screw up, they either (1) run away, (2) bluster, or (3) hide behind formalism. This whole response is (3). Draping yourself in the robes of 'well this is the Right Way To Do It, so I'm technically correct'. This is, of course, deeply ridiculous.

"We had no basis for excluding a trial that met the inclusion criteria of our review protocol." Presumably, then, "visibly problematic from across the room through heavy clothing" is not a *formal* source of bias.

"In conclusion, accusations of fraud are of course very serious. Prof. Elgazzar and colleagues must however be given appropriate opportunity to respond." Again, formalism. But it doesn't matter to the OUTCOME. Accident, incompetence, fraud - pish. It's unreliable as described.

Let's review the problems quickly: * introduction plagiarised, using thesaurus that makes some of the text incomprehensible * raw data contradicts summary data * gigantic cloned data sections * data entered as o not 0 (??) * randomisation failure * impossible M/SDs

Now, I can see why you might not notice some of that beforehand. It requires forensic analysis, which is specialised and boring. But the cat is long out of the bag, and these are not differences in opinion - they are absolute impossibilities.

But you'd *never* know this reading this letter. Side note: this result may have to be updated again, given the set of included studies. We'll see.

I think it's also not really an example of them doing the right thing even by academic standards - the proper response is to revise the paper and redo all of the work with the retraction removed Coincidentally, this is what @DrAndrewHill and team are doing

Honesty takes time and requires a spine. Both of these are in short supply during the Plaguetimes.

Bizarrely, he specifically references the Hill study here (ref 8). It seems he's unaware it has been corrected and that the conclusions did, in fact, change upon removal of the Elgazzar study.

Not sure my high school science teacher would have let get away with this. He would have demanded I rework the experiment.
