A very important thread. 'Intentionality' only matters to the privileged. It never centres the victim, suggesting that actions are less problematic if intentions were good. But victims don't care about intentions- they care about the pain and suffering they were subjected to.🧵https://twitter.com/HZiauddeen/status/1434624919959134210 …

'They are acting in good faith.' 'It was not my intention to hurt them' This is the privilege of intentionality, where someone's intentions are given more moral weight than their actual harmful actions and the impact of those actions. I've seen this again and again when discussing misinformation coming from scientists. I'm repeatedly told that they acted in 'good faith' and their actions were in line with 'what they believed'. I'm not even sure what this means, because it provides no solace to those impacted

I recently read a piece in the BMJ that portrayed Heneghan & Gupta as victims of incivility in academia, given the criticism they've received from colleagues. The piece centred them, rather than the tens of thousands of lives lost through delayed action by govt they advised on.

A bad faith element is the constant deflection and avoidance of actually addressing the criticism. Gupta has been shocking from the start, drawing totally unjustified conclusions, from which she never wavered, from a totally worthless model.

Another example is Ioannidis. Instead of admitting he invented that only 1% of the population would catch covid, he embarked on neverending misinterpretations of the IFR to muddy the waters. And whined non-stop about critics being political, unqualified, etc..

he was also centred as a victim in many articles- suggesting he was being silenced... despite having been platformed extensively on media, and even by the BMJ.

gosh, I remember that- I couldn't believe when I read it! That someone would actually publish such ad hominems...

It's maddening that the media seem to be incapable of pinning them down to sort out what's a lie and what's incompetence. Anyway, please keep up the excellent work of hammering on the science, the numbers and the logic. People notice, even if they won't acknowledge it.
