My comment is pretty simply - the essay seems to contradict itself. Not sure why it starts by implying the evidence is compelling then provides no evidence? Is there evidence you didn't cite?https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1433552368524615680?s=20 …

Health NerdVerified account @GidMKI'm not greatly interested in the school/mask debate, but I must say this is pretty wild - the article leads with this statement and then proceeds to offer no evidence whatsoever of any harms except "subjective [sic] shortness of breath" https://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1433447234574725128 … pic.twitter.com/5bZmvOhWo7Show this thread8 replies 7 retweets 41 likes -

I think the best way to resolve both the benefits & harms of masking kids in school is to study BOTH via RCT, as the author has suggested on Twitter. That way, we (hopefully) would be able to do a cost-benefit analysis using data.

That is a fair point, but not what he says in the article. He claims the harms are "firmly established" - that's strong language from an EBM expert.

It's also worth noting that as the author notes, you can't really establish harms in an RCT because if it does lead to some deficit in educational attainment that may take years to show up

Not to mention we can start a trial today and still need to make a decision about what to do tomorrow. EBM is more than just the best evidence, it includes patient values and expertise (good old venn diagram)

Oh and said expertise should ideally come from ID and Developmental Pediatricians.

I really don't like calling people out for their credentials, and would absolutely go to Vinay for Adult H/O advice and generally agree with him on EBM and Value, but on this topic I would definitely look to subject matter experts given lack of strong evidence.

I'm not an expert in schools, education etc, but I would say that if you are going to claim there is evidence for a point it is incumbent on you to provide that evidence
