People are very binary in their thinking. "COVID-19 being more dangerous for the elderly" has often morphed into "COVID-19 is less risky than flu for young adults"

Government (& opposition) & the press have all decided that it is okay for thousands to die from this preventable disease. Kids "don't catch it", to "kids don't get sick", to "only a few will die", to "reopen the schools with zero mitigation" is a deliberately murderous strategy.

Part of it is the tendency to only measure the impact of COVID-19 in deaths. (Somewhat understandable but an incomplete picture.)

People treat the risk calculation like it's the risk calculation for skydiving. Where the outcomes are typically death or no harm.
