whoa, using unapproved drugs in humans, and lying about this to patients, is punishable by law in most countries. I was told by my 1st epi supervisor during onboarding that it is one of the few things that can put researchers in jail.

I think you might mean "denied"? Or "rejected"? "Refuted" would be they'd actually shown that you were mistaken & they were correct. (Or at least, that's how I learnt it - though maybe it's one of those words where the original meaning is gradually sliding.)
