Myth: vaccines are massive money-makers for EVIL PHARMA Reality: best evidence indicates that most vaccines save AT LEAST $40 USD per dose given, much of which is in drug costs

I mean, don't get me wrong, pharmaceutical companies haven't covered themselves in glory this whole pandemic (*cough* remdesivir *cough*), but saying that vaccines are primarily a money-making exercise is just incorrect

Apologies, the first tweet is misleading here - it should read "at least $10 USD", not $40, I misremembered the paper that I was thinking about https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6316a4.htm …

Also, just to clarify - I don't particularly like pharmaceutical corporations, they can get fucked, but it's also worth remembering that not everything they do is wildly evil (just amoral)

People don't seem to realize how their business model operates. They want long-term repeat customers (think Viagra, Insulin, etc) or bonanza one-time payoffs (think Harvoni). Vaccines are low margin and infrequent, not a money maker.

I always chuckle at the anti-vax/pro Ivermectin group (these two often seem to go together) who are very much against evil Big Pharma and then I wonder who exactly they think makes Ivermectin (last time I checked it doesn't grow on trees)

This always reminds me about how people hate the police till they have a break in...anyone who gets a treatable cancer or serious disease will live based on pharma companies...I take 4 blood pressure pills a day, any other era I am dead at 50

I guess this will be a popular tweet. And there is a lot o amoral things in the industry (as in most). But good luck creating new drugs that save lives and treat horrible diseases without them. These companies are full of people that have devoted their lives to save others.

Is what AZ is doing with their vaccine, i.e. making it available at cost, immoral?

Decades of billion dollar fines suggest they lean somewhat towards the immoral.

In this case they got a low risk deal - lots of money pumped into clinical development which is the highest risk and the highest cost.

Pharma is a special xawe as they are getting paid by public moneys in many countries just because there is a high need. So it's senseless to argue this is filling pharma's pockets - it's basically business as usual.
