Myth: vaccines are massive money-makers for EVIL PHARMA Reality: best evidence indicates that most vaccines save AT LEAST $40 USD per dose given, much of which is in drug costs

I mean, don't get me wrong, pharmaceutical companies haven't covered themselves in glory this whole pandemic (*cough* remdesivir *cough*), but saying that vaccines are primarily a money-making exercise is just incorrect

Apologies, the first tweet is misleading here - it should read "at least $10 USD", not $40, I misremembered the paper that I was thinking about https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6316a4.htm …

Also, just to clarify - I don't particularly like pharmaceutical corporations, they can get fucked, but it's also worth remembering that not everything they do is wildly evil (just amoral)

Both statements are not totally incompatible. Vaccines save lives, and fill the pockets of pharma companies.

But if people are getting sick and going to hospital, does this not also 'fill the pockets' of pharma companies?

Hahaha yeah obviously different companies yeah Moderna in particular doesn’t probably offer much to hospitals in terms of internal medicine stuff etc if you do get hospitalized🤯💉💉💉💉💉🗽🌈☮️💟♾🤯

true re Moderna itself, but Flagship owns numerous therapeutics startups too the Moderna COVID vaccine is if nothing else an amazing PR opportunity, just folding the other companies under the name Moderna would be worth a mild loss (though ofc they are profiting)

AstraZeneca even made a loss on their vaccine (sold at ~$3 a dose), how evil of them!https://www.wsj.com/articles/astrazeneca-loses-money-on-covid-19-vaccine-for-second-straight-quarter-11627547543 …

This is the same discussion we have every year with the flu vaccine. "$40? They're making a killing. I'd rather get it and get over it" says someone who spends at least $40 on getting over it. Also baked in is that one's health and time are worth $0.pic.twitter.com/ckco42bmo6
