While I would love to receive an occasional ex gratia payment (or even a thank-you: hello, Cornell!), I don't see how this kind of work can be done by a permanent organisation with formal funding. /1https://twitter.com/stuartbuck1/status/1427639910094225422 …

      2) Uncovering this kind of fraud is tedious and thankless work. Right now, only a handful of folks have the independent means to do so. Funders (gov. and philanthropy) should fund a permanent organization of "Data Thugs." https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/02/meet-data-thugs-out-expose-shoddy-and-questionable-research …

Funding means answering to the funders. They will want reports on where their money is going. They will also want to ensure due process and "fairness". There will be no warrants to bust down doors and demand hard drives. /2

Academia is international. What's the legal context for a Dutch PI at a Canadian university conducting research with money from NIH and a UK foundation, when the misconduct may have been committed by the grad student from China or France? /3

Also, what does the career path look like for the people who are paid to do this? How do you get hired with a CV that says you are (hopefully) entirely incorruptible, when everyone how hires someone expects at least some degree of loyalty? /4

There would be a very lucrative career in forensic accounting I imagine for such people. That being said, traditional academia...probably not

I thought accountants were paid to hide problems, not to find them.

Imagine rival labs paying data scientists to uncover each others fraud 🙈
