Inviting the “Covid is safer for kids than the vaccine” crew to tell me what you think the infection hospitalization rate is. That is, what % of Peds SARS-CoV-2 infections require hospitalization? Please put your answer here or in comment section here: https://insidemedicine.bulletin.com/2370680396397133 …pic.twitter.com/aW121AqfI6

There's pretty good evidence on this actually - roughly 1 in 500 kids aged 1--17 are hospitalized if infected, and about 1 in 1,000 below age 10 https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.07.29.21261282v1 …pic.twitter.com/F07FmhYmhH

          Guessing this is pre-delta data.

The worst possible increase would be an increase by a factor of two or so.

Thanks. This is pre-Delta data from 2020, though, no?

So ISR is just Severe? But ICR is hospitalization? I need to find the definitions... Can one use that chart to roughly guess how many actual total infections we had here? I wasn't sure which to use: ISR or ICR. Age 0-4: 5 Hospitalized; 5-11: none; 12-15: 4; 16-17: 3 Total: 12

"Examples of this are the rate of severe infections (ISR), which we define as infections resulting in hospitalization or out-of-hospital death, and the rate of critical infections (ICR), which we define as infections resulting in critical care admission or out-of-ICU death."

While that definitely argues strongly that the vaccine is safer then Covid for kids. The data for that study is from before Sep 2020. I would love to see data like this for Delta. Sadly by the time someone compiles it we will be dealing with a different variant

So working backwards, as Florida is now averaging ~50 confirmed pediatric admissions per day, that would imply 25,000 kids age <17 are being newly infected across the state every single day? (Unless Delta has increased the hospitalization rate)

@DFisman indicated late last week that hospitalization ratio in Canada had increased by more than two. Wasn’t published report though. Which is to say still low but from what I understand PICU can’t surge in the same way.
