People: COVID-19 isn't 1918/19 influenza! It's much less bad! Me: what would COVID-19 look like without antibiotics, respirators, most surgery, supplemental oxygen, steroids, etc?

In 1918 the treatment for many things was morphine, cocaine, mercury, arsenic, and/or prayer. What would the death rate from COVID-19 be if that was our first-line method?

Hey don’t bag arsenic! It’s a great treatment (along with a vitamin A derivative ATRA for Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia) https://doi.org/10.1182/blood-2012-02-410746 …

People were "treating" COVID with ivermectin and hcq so maybe they were reenacting the Spanish flu?

It's an excellent question. I wonder if there's a way to figure it out? Maybe look at the death rate of the first few weeks that it was in China?

On the other hand, if morphine was our first line treatment for a variety of stuff we would care less for a variety of stuff.

Look at the hospitalization rate; these are all serious cases. If there were no effective treatments at all (ala 1918), most would die. Hospitalization rate may be a good approximation of lethality in the absence of treatment…or if the health care system is utterly overwhelmed.

I don't know about most hospitalized dying, but certainly a rather larger fraction. Oxygen is a staggeringly effective treatment.
