In 1918 the treatment for many things was morphine, cocaine, mercury, arsenic, and/or prayer. What would the death rate from COVID-19 be if that was our first-line method?

People shouldn’t make the mistake of simply comparing mortality between pandemics either to determine which is worse. Present-day general mortality rates are much lower than early 20th century’s, so the comparison has to take those into consideration too.
-
Indeed. Life expectancy in the 1910s was much lower than today, decades lower for the poorest.

Well, look at India. That gives us a pretty good idea what happens when disease is allowed to run rampant, and people are told to use their “personal responsibility” to overcome it.

So. Basically everyone that’s been hospitalized thus far? Do we know that number?
-
Not in the US, we have horrible tracking systems, and the multitude of insurance payers means no central clearing house for data. An estimate I saw was about 2.4M.

Re: "People: COVID-19 isn't 1918/19 influenza! It's much less bad!" Couple of threads below on this. In the CDC's old classification system, SARS-CoV-2 is category 5, same as 1918 influenza (Spanish flu). https://twitter.com/AtomsksSanakan/status/1372314470618370051 … https://twitter.com/AtomsksSanakan/status/1279569150713769990 … https://web.archive.org/web/20161219230924/https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/pdf/community_mitigation-sm.pdf …pic.twitter.com/6Sy0fprmUX

Before contrarians give the usual objection: The category for pandemic severity is based on CFR for clinically ill people in an unmitigated outbreak (ex: early in the pandemic). On that metric, SARS-CoV-2 is clearly category 5. https://twitter.com/AtomsksSanakan/status/1372316601316433929 … https://web.archive.org/web/20161219230924/https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/pdf/community_mitigation-sm.pdf …pic.twitter.com/PylxFk3xSk

Many areas affected in India are stuck in time with resources quasi comparable to 100 years ago. Millions dead! Yeah, this one is worse.
