A reasonable test of whether people have are basically competent is whether they included Belarus' COVID death data in their researchhttps://twitter.com/ArielKarlinsky/status/1424787236478988288 …

#WorldMortality update Heroic effort by hackers in Belarus to obtain mortality data up to March 2021 as reported by @CurrentTimeTv. The govt refused to publish after it showed massive excess in Mid 2020. Excess is 14x times higher than reported COVID at over 32K excess 1 pic.twitter.com/UO5V2LIn3u

Sorry, I meant UNCRITICALLY included Belarus data in their research. Obviously people who've included it but also pointed out how problematic it is are not incompetent

Though I can understand a competent researcher including Belarus as being an unexplained outlier that went against their main conclusion. It can be a sign of integrity to include something weird that undermined your conclusion; you can later be vindicated https://twitter.com/AtomsksSanakan/status/1385297461502226436 …pic.twitter.com/sJ5XdM0zwy

I am with you on being skeptical of official figures, but what is an example of any repressive regime that hid such a high death rate in the age of social media? Even Iran got caught digging mass graves.

...and same for Africa. No correction there either. It's so fun to do takes! You get famous for the good ones and can completely ignore the bad ones! If only life was everywhere like that!https://mobile.twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1263074933673844739 …

        Starving Engineer added,

Note that there's a lot of incoherence in the explanations we hear for Africa. E.g., "how dare you assume that small, poor countries can't be better at wide-scale public health measures than Europe, oh and also they are all undercounting cases by many orders of magnitude."
