In some ways this is worse. The unhinged campaign by Internet Atheists™ to encourage people to tick no religion if they think about it and decide they're probably not, has been met by the Archbishop of Sydney pushing the other direction. Let people decide their own faith.pic.twitter.com/harzkw9QZy

I'm not sure what a proper approach to the No Religion campaign's dubious (to put it politely) allusion to services secular society miss out on because of census numbers, but it wasn't "save our Catholic schools by ticking Catholic"

Census figures probably inform public spending eventually and indirectly, by policy makers and researchers using them, but the No Religion Campaign is acting like there's $1000 in library funding for every atheist and Fisher like it's $1000 for every catholic school the other way

They have a strong and direct impact on funding for organisations that have good lobbying, but since the No Religion crowd is almost entirely disorganised I reckon it'll do very little for their lack of funding

I'd roll my eyes at anyone else who said it has a strong and direct impact, but your pedigree in such matters gives me pause.

I think the impact is hard to see outside of the govt, but so many things in the public service rely directly on ABS stats. It may not be visible, but I'd say the impact is large

The question "how many of [x] group should we plan for?" defines a lot of how funding is allocated, and the first source of data for such questions is almost always ABS
