It is so reassuring to know that the lockdowns that our leaders inflicted on us “probably aren't worse than the pandemic itself”. As far as I know, none of the estimates of burden of COVID-19 death included the cost of lockdown & other Nonpharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs). https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1420929972663844867 …pic.twitter.com/wPmvsoG9Lw

That's where the excess deaths are extremely useful, as we discuss in the paper - in the short-term, deaths from non-COVID causes do not increase in places with lockdowns and no COVID-19 cases, thus lockdowns cannot be causing large numbers of deathshttps://gh.bmj.com/content/6/8/e006653 …

The World Mortality Dataset is the best source for this, recently published in eLifehttps://elifesciences.org/articles/69336

IIrc wasn't '21 excess death data for Aus trending above the 5 yr average even before the current outbreaks (re while 0 covid was still being maintained), and if so, does this give an indication of impact of delayed health care

To clarify I don't imagine that the analysis has been done (or should have been done w.out the full yrs data) but would this be the best available hypothesis? so rephrasing as *would this possibly give an indication of delayed hc from '20*)

Lockdowns are not a cure; this is shown in areas that have bottomed out death rates without big lockdowns. I didn't realize people were saying "lockdowns were independently causing large numbers of short-term deaths." They debate I've heard is lockdowns cause long term issues.

"It is impossible to determine from this evidence whether lockdowns have a net benefit" Great to hear. "What is clear is that locations that locked down without experiencing large epidemics of COVID-19 (eg, Australia, New Zealand)" Bit of a stretch to use Australia/NZ (Islands)
