The failure or success of this athlete is not good evidence for the rights and wrongs of being there in the first place. And hndsight is not an argument. Really REALLY rare I'm disagreeing with Gid but he's not using logical arguments here.

To use Gid's own logic, if Laurel had done well, would Gid have been wrong? No. It's simply irrelevent how she did. It's a bit analogous to arguing that it's not wrong to shoot at someone as long as you miss.
