Cochrane review on ivermectin just dropped. This is the current gold-standard summary: "the reliable evidence available does not support the use ivermectin for treatment or prevention of COVID‐19 outside of well‐designed randomized trials." https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD015017.pub2/full …

Big shock horror surprise type thing...😱 Cochrane review finds Ivermectin not recommended for use outside of RCTs. Please stop using worming tablets to treat virus infections folks... @GidMK https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD015017.pub2/full …

Worth noting that the main finding of the review is that the available evidence is very low quality, and so low certainty that the impact of ivermectin could be anything from very protective to very detrimental to health (i.e. it could be saving lives or ending them)

Another interesting point - the Cochrane review authors addressed why their review disagrees with previous very positive studies on ivermectin. They were particularly pointed about the weird ivmmeta websitepic.twitter.com/BjTqfxf9h8

But doesn't all the previous use of ivermectin for treting other conditions include safety studies?

It is surprising to me how many people in medicine were so quick to accept that hydroxychloroquine and/or ivermectin were effective treatments for viral infection when the history of antiviral meds is so disappointing. Low prior probability plus bad evidence should = no use.

Do we have examples where something like this has happened, and it’s ended up being a strong positive result in future? Or does the equivocal data point towards low or no effect?

It’s not likely in this case. There aren’t a lot of new or additional studies underway but the results are very inconsistent, which is a bad sign for detecting a conclusive, sizable effect

Pretty sure IVM is going to fall into the (undetectable) small benefit/detriment, I.e. no effect category.

“or ending them”? Saying nothing about IVM’s efficacy w/r/t Covid...is there any evidence for such a serious claim as this?
