Health Nerd Retweeted Dr Julie Blommaert  👩🏼‍🔬

The fact that early-career researchers believe that 5 hours of sleep a night while working an 80-hour week is "balanced" is actually pretty consistent with the insanity that is academia I reckonhttps://twitter.com/drjulie_b/status/1417615220512497667 …

Ok so the authors of this paper seem to also be ECRs so I absolutely don’t want to bag on them But none of these example time management charts are even remotely balanced https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1009124 … pic.twitter.com/AK9DvMsvvq

Why academics troll papers? Does not twitter ask whether you have read the paper? Nowhere in the paper it is stated that hours are ideal or recommended. The chart is an example time management tool as caption notes. Read papers in depth, consider ideas for a while & the context.

We're not trolling the paper, more commenting on how awful it is that early-career academics are *expected* to work 80+ hour weeks with 5 hours of sleep a night

They are not expected to, the piece is written to help them take charge of their own time! Not every week will be the same but the chart shows some of the key tasks & estimate hours are shown IF one was to include all in a week but tasks can be done over weeks so personalized.

If you moved any hours of work from one week to another you would eliminate sleeping entirely for a period of 7 days. That this is an expectation for ECRs does not mean it's reasonable

To put it another way - that chart would be straightforwardly illegal in Australia due to employment laws. Not saying it doesn't happen, but it shouldn't

Read papers in depth before commenting about them, basic rule of academia, scholarship & reviewing other people’s work.

No it is not an expectation & common sense would prevent one from looking at a visual so simplistically. We have included this visual as a tool for researchers to personalize. using social media to diminish articles you have not read in depth does not set a great example for ECRs.

Since you continue to insist neither of us have read your paper, I am done with this conversation. It is clearly not constructive. Have a good day
