The scale of just how badly science fucked this one up is astonishing. Hundreds of thousands of views and millions of overhead opinions of vain anti-science divs and meta-analyses, AND NOT ONE PERSON CHECKED THE DATA.https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/jul/16/huge-study-supporting-ivermectin-as-covid-treatment-withdrawn-over-ethical-concerns …

Ethical concerns is a bit strange no?

Do you mean the ostensible reason why @ResearchSquare has mostly-retracted the preprint? If so, I don't really care. Whatever enables them to save face. At least they pulled it quickly. It would take much longer to corroborate all the claims we've made about the data file.

Ethical concerns is general, but it makes sense if someone stumbled across the plagiarism. Frankly, preprint servers are not supposed to be able to magic up the peer review that finds this stuff. Journals can't, why would not-journals be expected to.

But they should be open and free like @biorxivpreprint and @medrxivpreprint which allows people to go through the data; Lots of great papers there, can take a year or more before a paper gets through, essentially unchanged, peer review.

There is no requirement for open data on @biorxivpreprint or @medrxivpreprint. It would be interesting to hear from @cshperspectives whether other aspects of this article would have been caught by @medrxivpreprint screening.

My two cents - I don't blame researchsquare at all. Their entire mission is to openly publish (as with the arxiv family), we as a community are the ones who so completely failed to recognize the issues here

Yet why does it exist when you have the arrive family, where btw, papers are read before being put up and SARS-CoV-2 papers read more carefully from my experience of delay between submission and appearance.

Does anyone know what the business model is of Research Square or its parent company?
