A cost of nearly $100k (pre-discount) for some stitches
That's...about 100-1,000x the cost of the same service in Australia
America is WILD

Someone pointed out that it would be cheaper if you are a patient without medical insurance to fly first class to Australia and pay a GP to do it here.
Or just carry a needle and thread and a small bottle of vodka around with you ...

My first experience with healthcare in the U.S. was as a grad student in 2013. I had health insurance but had to pay $2,500 out of pocket for a non-emergency CT scan. I compiled information about the actual cost of the procedure in comparable countries and asked for justification
They promised that they would get back to me. They never did, and instead sent the bill to collections. And this was at a non-profit academic hospital subsidized by the state.
$100k isn't 'real cost', just invoiced one. Real costs never disclosed beforehand. Everyone gets 'discount' but inequitable. US has perverse regressive billing where insurers get biggest discounts (often >90%) while uninsured pay much more for same service. US system is cooked
Even worse for primary care. Many people in US have 'catastrophic' plans which explicitly exclude 'non-emergency' primary or ongoing care. When living there for 12mo one after-hours visit for daughter cost ~$3k. Vaccinating her cost about same and was still incomplete
I've been retired for a few years, but we charged $300ish to put in some stitches in our urgent care (not an academic hospital ER) in Southern California, the patients paid $25-35 as their copay.
The American healthcare system is failing at multiple levels and there is no hope in sight.
I'm glad you clarified this. In my head I was like "100-1000 X 0 is still 0".
