One trick I learned from reddit (really) is to talk to billing dept about a payment plan. Especially if it's a hospital, & if you're income is lower, or if insurance has paid something, much of the time they'll throw most or all of the charges out. US health insurance

Outrageous. An uninsured traveller who can't access medicare in NSW can expect $200 - $600 depending on where they go and who they see.

My husband developed a cardiac arrhythmia while we were holidaying in Japan. Total cost of treatment in ED in Kyoto University Hospital (IV fluids, drugs etc.) was $600 Australian dollars - less than $500 US.
