I really, really struggle with this question. If you get AZ today, you'll be fully vaccinated mid-October. If you wait 6 weeks for Pfizer, you'll be immunised sooner and at potentially lower risk. That being said, AZ today is better protection right now

If one dose of AZ provides good protection I don’t see how it’s other than a no brainer unless you have a condition that rules AZ out. This waiting for Pfizer thing is what got us into this mess in the first place.

It’s a no-brainer for me- any vaccine today that provides ANY level of protection > a vaccine I MAY get to have in October.

If you wait for Pfizer, you may get Covid in the meantime. You’ll have zero protection. If you have AZ now, you’ll have up to 80% protection.

If outbreak ongoing, would have AstraZeneca dose #2 at 4-6 wks, as in context of delta outbreak completion benefit w/ hospitalization risk ⬇️⬇️ may be preferable. True answer though is don’t really know 4-8 vs 12 wks.

It does seem 1 dose of AZ already builds up a decent level of protection from severe outcomes based on UK data👇 My assumption is that Pfizer will be open to <40s in early September so, depending on bookings, you might end up with very close 2nd dose timing! I might be wrong!https://twitter.com/sailorrooscout/status/1413605927282958337 …

Fantastic! According to Public Health England, the vaccines (Pfizer and AstraZeneca here) ARE indeed effective against Delta (B.1.617.2) and are: •80% effective against hospitalization after one dose •96% effective against hospitalization after both doses

Germany is vaccinating every 1st shot AZ receiver with option on 2nd shot Pfizer after 4 weeks.. So mb Australia, do that? Also the 12 week waiting for 2nd shot AZ is recommended, but not that big of a deal (like 4 weeks crap vaccine, 12 weeks great vaccine)

Downside is that you can't perform all these nifty calculations about if it would be safer to vacc this way or get infected, because there is no data afaik, but Germans want to finish fastest and are all about getting the highest nAbs going.

Pfizer will be a tad longer than 6 weeks away. Just coz we've organised a big shipment doesn't guarantee we'll get it on time. Happened with Italy/EU, can easily happen again. Don't put all Ur eggs in one basket. The best vaccine is the one in your arm.

The optimal would be 1 dose of AZ now and a Pfizer as 2nd dose if available before 12 weeks, otherwise the 2nd AZ dose at 12 That way you have good protection now vs serious illness plus best protection ASAP. Protection from 1 dose AZ does not fade < 12 wk Pity not allowed.
