A fascinating COVID-19 pipeline that I had not thought about much is woeful, heavily-biased preprints of studies making their way into meta-analyses and being used in treatment protocols I reckon it's a very big problem

I don't think published research is inherently better than preprints, but some of these preprints are so bad that they should never have been included in any reviews ever

me also - except substitute ‘preprints” for “papers”...

I have always had these concerns about meta-analyses because all data are not equal. Genuinely interested in how much worse the existence of preprints make things (I'm not arguing they don’t) and what does it tell us about inclusion/exclusion criteria people should be using?

I’m already deeply uncomfortable with preprints being cited in supposed news articles as established fact, which is happening every day now.

A new mechanism is required bc the peer review gives you assurances but also delays - and rushing info even when time is of the essence leads to pseudo-science … perhaps science journalists are more urgently needed to serve as a sort of gate-keepers meanwhile. Thinking Gideon

for sure, designed to get underequipped, desperate hospitals/countries to buy in, which in turn means they can say 'it's been used to treat thousands of people, how can it be quackery?', then more half-baked studies, repeat

Devils advocate here: producing a meta-analysis almost certainly qualifies authors as abled reviewers in their own right. It’s not like peer review process accounts for more than a handful of reviewers anyway. If study doesn’t change btwn preprints and paper, why not include it?

A properly conducted meta-analysis would exclude pre-print studies. Any author(s) who publish a pre-print of a meta-analysis that is itself based almost entirely on other pre-print studies has given up on producing serious science.

Some of the studies I’ve been sent recently by advocates of certain drugs are total word salads
