I must not be stating myself clearly enough. My point: A *hypothesis*, clearly discussed as a *hypothesis*, can nevertheless, in certain forums, result in people blowing all of their savings in desperation on an unproven cure. Because for them, *hypothesis* = HOPE.https://twitter.com/DaveKeto/status/1410400919372529665 …

I do know the difference, that's why I was drawing the distinction. Per my point of heavily emphasizing where something is a hypothesis as opposed to a fact

If you say "Hey, I have a HYPOTHESIS I'm really excited about! Feeding your autistic child a gluten-free, casein-free diet could transform them, as it has in these anecdotes I'm going to share!" Are you emphasizing the *hypothesis* part? Yes. Is that totally irresponsible? Yes.

I think some people are (deliberately?) naive about how easy it is to influence health decisions made by people who are looking for solutions. One anecdote - I wrote a blog about how headlines about ibuprofen risk were overblown...

The FIRST PARAGRAPH of the piece said "this is based on my assessment of one study, talk to your doctor and listen to them for individual health advice" I got an email years after publishing the piece from someone who'd read it and used it as ammunition to ignore her dr's advice

I replied telling her that if her doctor told her to stop taking ibuprofen, their advice was probably much better than the very general epidemiological assessment in my article. But point is, even though I explicitly said not to do it, people used the piece as personalized advice
