To combat the lockdown blues, here's my new piece in the Guardian about vaccines and the hope that even relatively low levels of immunization bringshttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jun/24/even-with-the-sydney-outbreaks-covid-vaccines-are-already-doing-their-job-and-were-all-better-off-for-it …

Thank u! I was just whinging today about how Australians are not hearing enough about how protective the vaccines are. A lot of public doesn't understand some of the basics about vaccine efficacy. I don't think it's well communicatedhttps://twitter.com/EstherRockett/status/1407929931158286340?s=20 …

⬇️ is outcome of politicised #COVID19Aus. It's not public's job to be scientifically literate - it's job of @GregHuntMP & National Cabinet to make sure public understands benefits of vaccination. & public health commentators to read the room & communicate accordingly pic.twitter.com/SumzWRrMLi

But does this also go for Delta, with an estimated R0 of 7? That would mean that by halving it you get 3.5, which is most definitely no longer "enough to rely on contact tracing".

I'm hoping that the single dose of AZ that the Sydney visitor had will mean that we get 0 cases in NZ. We should see about that in the next few days.

Fantastic piece. “it is, unfortunately, quite hard to see the cases of disease that never happened” is spot on.
