Have there been any cases of #covid19 transmission that are believed to have occurred through surface contact, where airborne transmission could be ruled out?

I don't think as a general rule that you can easily rule out airborne transmission in this context (in a similar way to how it is hard to rule out fomites) so I'd guess no

Trying to imagine a scenario where you could conclusively rule out airborne spread. Maybe an outdoor gym with a strong wind but a protected machine or something? It would be quite hard

Yeah or when the fomite has moved away from the potential respiratory source to a different location. A book returned through chute of a library. Takeaway restaurant where chef/customer infected, but delivery driver is not. We have 178 mil cases. But can’t identify 1 of fomite.

That's not a great denominator, because outbreak investigations only look at a tiny fraction of the case numbers. Being generous, we've carefully investigated maybe 10k cases across the world to the extent necessary

And even then, the vast majority of those investigations don't rule out fomites, they just say "people were in close proximity we don't know exactly how the virus was transferred" or something similar

They tried with Rhinovirus. Got infected poker players to give their manky cards and chips to uninfected players in another room. This was the same group that put players in arms braces so they couldn't touch their faces and play against infected players. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00251-4 …pic.twitter.com/p8n8TeejaS

Sure, but that sort of small study only demonstrates that fomites are less common transmissions, the numbers are far too small to say that it doesn't happen or even rule out a relatively large number of fomite transmissionspic.twitter.com/Rc1Ee5psJo

Of course, if they had demonstrated it it would have been more interesting
