Was reminded of this old blog recently - scare stories about red meat and cancer are still all too commonhttps://gidmk.medium.com/red-meat-isnt-giving-us-all-cancer-b39e4369d7f2 …

Hmmm I respectfully disagree on this - my research in the uk was bowel cancer (stem cell, pure science and maths) and the evidence of the link between red meat and bowel cancer is pretty sturdy…

So, I think it's a particularly interesting one because I don't disagree that there may be a link, but even if there is one I think the risks are often presented in a very scary light when they are in fact pretty meaningless to the individual

Like, the study from that blog had an absolute risk increase of about 1 event per 1000 per decade for going from fully vegetarian to the highest meat intake, but the headlines were "eat meat and you'll get cancer"

Well we all know the headlines go for sensationalism. It’s the same as smoking. Risk increases but not everyone who smokes will get lung cancer yet we know the link is a causal one….

Sure, but smoking causes a huge proportion of lung cancer - even in a worst-case scenario the evidence seems to show that only a pretty tiny % of bowel cancer is caused by red meat (and much of that is probably processed red meat as well)

Have a look at some of the molecular pathologies recently published…. It may change your mind.

I'm confused - how would that change the attributable fraction of cancer? Am I misunderstanding?

And you are right in that I think 80% or lung cancers are found in smokers or ex. But the current figure (which may well grow as evidence emerges remember - we’ve known about cigs and ça a lot longer!) of 18% for red and processed meat and bowel ça is not small….
