Any vaccination target we set will ultimately be arbitrary. That being said, I don't think any experts disagree that if we have (say) 80%+ of Australians vaccinated the risk of COVID-19 becomes far less pressinghttps://twitter.com/7NewsSydney/status/1403128604775444484 …

Whether that means we reopen borders entirely is ultimately a political decision, but I don't understand why we wouldn't set a target, even if the figure is very ambitious

Variants may change the calculation slightly, but realistically if we were at 80% of the whole country and nearly 100% of adults vaccinated the risk of having an outbreak that seriously threatened the healthcare system would be very low

is it one of being motivated not to fail (again) politically when the nth announcement is not met, thus no political accountability? suspect this is large driver of no targets. +ve message framing on the benefits of vaccinating (opening up, seeing family) may help vaccine uptake

I think also, it’s important to acknowledge that there *are* harms to keeping the border shut for another year, or whatever they are thinking. COVID elimination is an important goal but it’s disingenuous to pretend it isn’t hurting people to block travel.

Especially in Australia and New Zealand, where so many people have family overseas who may not be able to visit or vice versa. It’s been almost 1.5 years.

The government is going over a bunch of data right now — most of which we've discussed on this cursed website recently. To me, this is the most interesting new piece of information: modelling that shows B.C. expecting the decrease in cases to stop over the next month. pic.twitter.com/9JEkXiCrEu

They really need some kind of protocol to verify vaccination at immigration/border control. I'm unaware of any such "yellow card" kind of documentation that works internationally for proof of C19 vaccination.

"health advice" is doing lots of heavy lifting for what are transparently political decisions without a clearly correct medical answer
