This is a really interesting thread If the question is ‘Why Melbourne?’ This may be part of the answer https://twitter.com/KosSamaras/status/1400234484155310080 …

@KosSamaras would have more credibility if he used maps to the same scale. Bathurst is not part of Sydney.

Scale has nothing to do with it. It’s all about LGAs, suburbs, streets. But hey, don’t take my word for it. The Australian wrote about this last year.https://www.theaustralian.com.au/inquirer/melbourne-postcodes-point-to-coronavirus-pain/news-story/a4089e2697866fd139db8d0d68a7eb7e …

I don't think this is particularly true. Part of the issue is that you're using LGA rather than a more granular measure - here's what those maps look like if you use SA2 (~10,000 person blocks) rather than LGA (~100,000 people) pic.twitter.com/CgEq94IR4G

And even take a look at those maps. Have a close look at Melbourne’s west to north west, and north. All one big corridor of disadvantage. Now some of us know this because WE live here. In these suburbs and watched our folk die from COVID.

I work in Blacktown and it is remarkably similar in terms of the geographic spread of disadvantage But no Covid-19 deaths recently 🤷‍♂️

The area in question covers 5 LGAs, without separation. 1.2 million people. The vast majority of these people could not afford to buy in your suburb. Median house price is aligned with our outer east. But this is worth a read too.https://www.theaustralian.com.au/inquirer/melbourne-postcodes-point-to-coronavirus-pain/news-story/a4089e2697866fd139db8d0d68a7eb7e …
