I agree that an engineered origin is exceedingly unlikely. The headline and much of the article imply that a lab leak is equivalent to the disease being engineered, which isn’t true. The main theories I’ve seen revolve around the labs in Wuhan studying existing viruses.

Lab leaks of existing viruses have happened many times, including the last known case of smallpox and the resurgence of H1N1 influenza.

We don't know nearly enough about this yet, really good virologists and infectious disease epi folks are on both sides of this, bad science and journalism doesn't help, you pointed out some examples, the lack of Chinese transparency doesn't help. Either does Daczak and his ilk

Daszak's involvement in the WHO investigation was deeply troubling. Could there be a larger conflict of interest?

"Reverses the proof of burden". The classic Cosmic Teapot fallacy. Assertion: "There is a purple teapot orbiting around Uranus and the proof of burden is on you to disprove it. If you can't then you have to accept the claim as valid"
-
Whoops! *burden of proof* (not "proof of burden"). The fallacy is AKA a "burden of proof error" ie the burden of proof is always on the person making the positive claim

This article is much more objective in surveying the evidence for both theories.

"We know that new diseases commonly spring from animal origins, and that this is quite likely when it comes to Covid-19." Any evidence for your assertion?
